A few days after meeting with Walker and his dad, Isla’s phone pinged with a text message. She froze.

“What is it?” Kelly said, placing her coffee cup up to her lips.

“Walker just texted me.”

“Well, what did he say?” Kelly asked, placing her coffee mug back on the saucer on the table in front of her.

Wale’s Coffee Shop was their go to hangout spot. It was where they went to escape and gossip about what everyone else from high school was doing after college.

“He asked me how my day was going.” She held up her phone.

“Well, maybe you should answer?” Kelly insisted.

“I don’t know,” Isla said, shrugging off the possibility that he might have feelings for her.

“Oh, come on, you haven’t been with anyone serious since Sayer. It’s time to get back out there,” Kelly said. “Do you want a muffin?”

Isla took a sip of her vanilla cappuccino. “Sayer was different.”

“How so?”

“He was my person, and so was his mom. I was a part of their family. With Walker, I don’t know, his parents are so uppity and pompous,” she said, her mouth turning flat.

“Who says pompous anymore?” Kelly laughed.

“Whatever.” Isla rolled her eyes. She glanced at the text again. “It’s just hard. I can’t help comparing everyone to Sayer, even though I know I shouldn’t. He was my first for literally everything,” she confessed.

Kelly squeezed Isla’s hand. “I know.”

“I haven’t opened up again. I don’t want to get hurt.”

“You can’t go into it already wondering how it’s going to fail,” Kelly offered. “Just go into it thinking he’s someone to fill up your time before New York.”

Isla chewed on the inside of her cheek for a few moments before picking up the phone. “Yeah, you’re right,” she said.

“Plus, some free dinners here and there would be nice.” Kelly laughed, but her face was completely serious.

“Only you would think that way,” Isla chuckled.

The coffee shop was getting busy. The exposed brick and warm fire exuded the old sentiments of Sayer’s house with his mom. She wondered what he was up to, how his mom was doing. Was he here in Marblehead? Or had he travel somewhere else? He never seemed like someone to stay in one place forever, and to be honest, she didn’t see him anywhere around their small town. She would be lying if she said she never looked around the room at a restaurant she was meeting friends at, searching for him. Sometimes she wondered if he ever saw her, walking around town or driving in her car.

“Well,” Kelly interrupted. She leaned forward. “What are you going to say back to Walker?”

Isla’s fingers wavered over the screen. “Not sure, how do you think I should reply?”

“You can’t seem desperate.” She pinched her lips together in thought, drumming her fingers against the side of her coffee.

“What if I just reply not bad, and you?” Isla asked, typing it into her phone.

“Oh, I like that. Open the door for him and see how he responds,” Kelly said, wiggling her brows.

Not bad, and you? – Isla Wade

“Yes, girl.
